FAQ

Questions, answered.

Everything you need to know about renting the Cirrus SR20 G6 and our FAA-certified simulator at Falcon Field.

The short version

We rent aircraft. We're not a flight school.

Kodiak Aviation is an aircraft rental operation — we don't provide instruction or run a training program. Qualified pilots rent our SR20 G6 and simulator and fly solo, and student pilots are welcome to rent and train with their own approved instructor. Browse our approved instructors or bring your own.

About us & instruction

The basics

Is Kodiak Aviation a flight school?
No. We are an aircraft rental operation, not a flight school, and we do not provide flight instruction. We rent our Cirrus SR20 G6 and FAA-certified simulator to qualified pilots. You're welcome to fly solo or bring your own approved instructor.
Do you provide flight instruction?
No, we don't employ instructors. We do, however, maintain a list of independent, insurance-approved CFIs you can contact directly — see our Instructors page. You contract with and pay them directly.
Can I bring my own instructor?
Yes — as long as your instructor meets our insurance requirements, you're able to. Please have your instructor reach out to us at info@kodiakaviationco.com for more information so we can confirm eligibility and complete a quick checkout in the aircraft.
Can student pilots rent the aircraft to train?
Yes. Student pilots are welcome to rent the aircraft and do their training in it, provided they hold the appropriate endorsements from their instructor and fly within those limitations. Your instructor must be approved by us first.
What are the insurance requirements for an outside instructor?
Our insurance policy sets minimum standards for any CFI instructing in N701YZ — things like certificates, ratings, and time in make and model. The fastest way to confirm is to have your instructor contact us directly and we'll walk them through what's required.

Renting & requirements

Before you fly

What do I need to rent the aircraft?
A valid pilot certificate (or student certificate with the right endorsements), a current medical, at least 5 hours of time in type (Cirrus SR20), mandatory non-owned (renter's) insurance that meets our minimum limits (see below), and a completed checkout flight in N701YZ. Contact us and we'll confirm our current requirements.
What are the checkout requirements to rent?
Before solo rental you'll need at least 5 hours of time in type (Cirrus SR20) and a checkout flight with us. The checkout covers the Garmin Perspective+ avionics, the CAPS parachute system, aircraft-specific procedures, and Falcon Field operations. Don't have 5 hours in type yet? You can build it with one of our approved instructors. Instructors complete a checkout before instructing in the aircraft as well.
Is renter's insurance required?
Yes — non-owned (renter's) insurance is mandatory in order to rent. The aircraft is covered under our policy, but that does not cover you personally as the renter. Before you fly, your policy must meet at least these minimum limits:
  • Bodily injury & property damage (excluding loss of use): $250,000 each occurrence / $25,000 each person
  • Medical payments: $1,000
  • Physical damage (hull), including loss of use: $50,000
Renter's policies that meet these limits are inexpensive relative to the exposure they cover. Reach out to info@kodiakaviationco.com if you have questions about acceptable coverage.
Can I use the aircraft for hour-building or IFR currency?
Absolutely. Approved renters use the SR20 G6 for hour-building, proficiency, and IFR currency, and the FAA-certified simulator for loggable instrument practice — solo or with your own instructor.

Pricing, scheduling & access

Rates & access

What does it cost to rent?
The Cirrus SR20 G6 (N701YZ) is $285/hour dry, and the FAA-certified simulator is $100/hour. Block-hour discounts bring the aircraft rate down as low as $215/hour — see our Packages page.
What does the "dry" rate mean?
A dry rate means fuel is not included in the hourly price — you're billed for fuel separately. The rate you see is for the aircraft itself.
Do block-hour packages expire?
Yes. Block-rate (discount) hour purchases are valid for 3 months from the date of purchase. Any unused hours after that period expire and are non-refundable. See our Refund Policy for details.
Do you allow overnight rentals?
Yes. The pilot understands that, for any night the aircraft is kept away from its home airport, a minimum of 3 flight hours per night is charged. For example: if you only fly 1.5 hours that day, you'll be charged for an additional 1.5 hours to meet the 3-hour minimum. But if you fly 3.0 hours or more, there's no additional charge.
Is there Wi-Fi in the aircraft?
Yes — the aircraft is equipped with free onboard Starlink Wi-Fi, so you and your passengers can stay connected in flight at no extra charge.
What are your scheduling and access hours?
Every approved renter gets a unique door access code to enter the hangar and fly any time, day or night — true 24/7 access on your schedule. Our office assistance hours for booking help and questions are Monday–Friday, 6:00 am – 8:00 pm.
How do I book a session?
Head to our Contact page and send us your details, or call +1 (480) 690-0590. We'll get you set up with a checkout, and once you're an approved renter you'll book your aircraft and simulator time directly through our Flight Schedule Pro scheduling system.
How do payments work for the aircraft versus instruction?
Aircraft and simulator rental are paid to Kodiak Aviation. If you fly with an instructor, their fees are set by and paid directly to them — the two are billed separately.
Is the simulator loggable?
Yes. Our Cirrus simulator is FAA-certified, so the time is loggable for instrument currency and training under the applicable regulations. It's identical in avionics configuration to the aircraft.
Where are you located?
We're at Falcon Field Airport (KFFZ), 4520 E Mallory Cir #117, Mesa, AZ 85215 — one of the most pilot-friendly general aviation airports in the Phoenix metro area.
